Additional Kentucky Derby Info

The Kentucky Derby, or “The most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” is the annual Grade I stakes race in Louisville Kentucky.  “The Derby” as it is known, is the first of the three annual races in the Triple Crown, and is followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.  The 1¼-Mile dirt track race is the largest attended Thoroughbred race of the year, with more than 150,000 Tickets being sold for the “Run For The Roses.”

2017 saw the largest number ticket sales in The Kentucky Derby’s history, with 158,070 spectators packing Churchill Downs to watch as Always Dreaming took the $2-Millon purse.  Always Dreaming may have gotten the biggest crowd, but Secretariat the Hall of Fame stallion holds the record for his run in 1973, clocking in at just 1:59:40.

The race is just one part of getting a ticket to the Kentucky Derby- while traditions abound, perhaps the most famous is the Mint Julep and the fashion statement that the ladies (and many gentlemen too!) make with their stunning hats.  Away from the Grandstands and millionaires Row, Tickets for the infield have grown in popularity, and the festival atmosphere has taken off in recent years as attendance grows.
